Hi, Dr. Paschal here with Paschal Orthodontics, and today we’re going to talk about brushing and flossing your teeth when you have braces – how to do it and why it is so important.

Your braces are made up of a combination of brackets and archwires that work to gently move your teeth over time. As you eat and drink throughout the day, those same brackets and archwires can collect food debris and bacteria, which can lead to plaque and tartar buildup on your teeth. That is why it is so important that you brush and floss every day.

You will use this like a needle and thread by pulling the floss underneath the wire and you’ll go in a back and forth motion and hit both sides of your teeth. Make sure that you get in between every tooth You want to make sure that, when you are brushing your teeth, you use small, circular motions and brush above and below your brackets. You also want to make sure to get those bristles in behind your archwires. Don’t forget to brush all the way back to your molars. A lot of people forget to do that and that’s where a lot of plaque can build up. Also, be sure to brush your gums – top and bottom – because bleeding gums is a sign of bad dental hygiene.

To properly floss your teeth when you have braces, you’re going to want to use the floss pick that you received at your first appointment. You will use this like a needle and thread, using the pick to pull the floss behind the wire. Then, using a back and forth motion, floss both sides of your teeth. You want to be sure that you get in between every tooth, including your molars.

Brushing and flossing your teeth when you have braces can be a bit tricky at first, but it will get easier the more often you do it. If you have any questions about brushing and flossing or are having trouble using the floss pick, give us a call and we’ll be happy to help!
